JEDDAH: The Supreme Court announced Tuesday as the first day of the month of Muharram for the Hijrah year 1435. The crescent for the month of Muharram was not visible on the eve of 29 Dul Hijjah 1434, corresponding to Monday, Nov. 4.
A month in the lunar calendar must be extended to 30 days if the crescent is not visible. The court, therefore, decreed Tuesday, Nov. 5, as the beginning of the new Hijrah year according to the Umm Al-Qura calendar.
