BHOPAL, India: At least 115 people, including 30 children were killed and more than 100 injured in a stampede on a narrow bridge to a temple in Datia district of Madhya Pradesh on Sunday.
The bridge over the swollen Sindh river, which leads to the temple was chock-a-block with over one hundred thousand devotees from Madhya Pradesh and neighboring Uttar Pradesh.
The chaos broke out as rumors spread that the bridge was collapsing over the river, D.K. Arya, deputy inspector general of police in the Chambal region of Madhya Pradesh state, told the Press Trust of India.
Hours later, relatives were searching for missing loved ones among the bodies that were lying grouped together on the bridge. Over 100 people were being treated for injuries including broken bones.
Police wielding sticks had charged the crowd in an effort to contain the rush, Arya said. People retaliated by hurling stones at officers, and one officer was badly injured.
