Health Minister Abdullah Al-Rabeeah visited Khalid bin Mohsen Shaari, 22, an obese patient weighing 610 kilograms, at King Fahd Medical City in Riyadh and conveyed the greetings of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah and his best wishes for quick recovery.
Al-Rabeeah discussed the treatment plan for Shaari with doctors and specialists at the hospital and asked the medical team to provide the patient with the best possible care. He commended the king’s humanitarian gesture to Shaari and other citizens. Shaari has undergone medical tests at KFMC and his condition is stable, said Dr. Abdul Aziz Al-Humaidhy, undersecretary at the Health Ministry. He thanked King Abdullah for giving his instruction to authorities to treat Shaari, who cannot move because of his condition.
Shaari was brought to the hospital from his hometown in Jazan on an air ambulance plane with the support of Civil Defense and other authorities.
“King Abdullah’s gesture to help Shaari return to normal life is praiseworthy,” said Al-Humaidhy. He was unable to go school because of his condition.
“This is an exceptional case and we required to import some special equipment from the United States and make special bed, lift and wheelchair for the patient,” he said.
Dr. Ayed Al-Qahtani, consultant laparoscopic surgery and obesity at KFMC, said: “The pregnancy and birth of Shaari were quite natural. After five months of his birth he developed convulsions and lack of consciousness for nearly two years and since then his weight was continuously growing, preventing him from movement.”
Shaari has 10 brothers. The eldest, 23, is also suffering from excess weight (130 kg) while another brother aged 18 weighs 100 kg.
