An estimated 100,000 extra Umrah pilgrims are expected in the country because of the extension of the visa application deadline to Ramadan 15 or July 24.
Ahmad Sheikh Bafaqih, who specializes in Haj and Umrah economics, said the government was wise to stipulate that an equal number of pilgrims must leave for these visas to be approved.
“Many Umrah companies and their agents around the world criticized the decision (to extend the deadline for applications). They believed the mechanism was to get rid of the current pilgrims without granting any extra visas. But the Ministry of Haj approved the extension mechanism, on the condition that current pilgrims leave Saudi territory,” he said.
He said the measure was taken to prevent overcrowding and safety problems in Makkah because of the ongoing construction work.
More visas will see more revenue for the country. An estimated SR 17 billion has flowed into the country since the start of the Umrah season, based on average SR 3,500 spent by each pilgrim. This includes air tickets, accommodation and transportation but excludes spending on shopping, restaurants and tours.
The Ministry of Haj told Umrah companies it might stop the system if there are violations. A team of 1,000 employees have been assigned to monitor the performance of these companies in Makkah and Madinah. To ensure compliance, the ministry provided these companies with an automated system available on smartphones and tablets.
