For a decade, Bashar Assad was able to convince many people around the world by his appearance and politeness that he was a civilized person. But those who knew him were surprised to see in him a totally different character. He showed an awful character when the uprising in Syria began. Actually, Bashar is like Al Pacino in the movie The Godfather. Everybody thought Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) was the don Vito’s most civilized son but he turned to be the most dangerous man in the mafia.
The other crazy man is the North Korean President, Kim Jong-un. It is true that Bashar doesn’t look or dress like him, but he is worse than Kim.
Since he succeeded his father, Bashar committed in 10 years a series of crimes and plotted wars that have not still ended. He assassinated more Lebanese figures than his father did during the war in the 1970s.
He controlled behind his borders a seven-year-long war, which he called the Iraqi opposition against the American occupation. More than 100 thousand Iraqis and Americans were killed in this war.
On the other hand, Kim, despite his continuous threats, he confined his crimes within his country’s borders.
Bashar and Kim are same. The only difference is that Assad is always well dressed up and appears with his wife as if he is one of Wall Street brokers in New York. But from inside, he is a dictator, a butcher who did not hesitate during the two-year revolution to massacre people in a way we never saw it in our region.
The similarity between the two is that both of them were not the expected successors. Kim’s father wanted his older son to take over from him but he changed his mind after he was deported from Japan for entering the country with a forged passport to visit Disney land.
Bashar’s father also wanted his older son to succeed him but he died in a car accident. He was speeding in his Ferrari on the airport road.
Bashar managed to hide his real character. His civilized appearance earned him respect among many people, especially in the West. Everyone who met him admits to have been deceived by Bashar’s look. Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was one of those who believed in Bashar and was ready to lift sanctions from Syria. He hosted Bashar and his wife and imposed him on other leaders in one of the national ceremonies. He spent two years defending Bashar politically. Eventually, he discovered the truth. Bashar was not but a criminal. Sarkozy became one of those who want to oust Bashar.
Bashar’s policy, definitely, is based on deception. The New York Times mentioned that Bashar delegated a number of businessmen loyal to him to convince the Obama administration that Bashar is fighting terrorist jihadists.
We cannot deny the fact that jihadists have penetrated the Syrian rebels and they announced their presence and ties to Al-Qaeda finally. But this makes us suspect that the Syrian regime and its Iranian ally are behind entering of jihadists in the revolution to make the world think that Bashar is really fighting Al-Qaeda. Just like when the Syrian regime used these jihadists in Lebanon and Iraq before.
What the Syrian people are doing is not only great for themselves, but they are also freeing themselves from one of the world’s worst regimes. They are rather clearing the world from a regime that supported and directed terrorism for 30 years. Saddam and Qaddafi are gone now. Only Bashar is left.
