The Saudi Geological Survey (SGS) announced the discovery of a mountain in the waters of the Red Sea to the north of Jeddah, posing a threat to the maritime traffic in the area.
The mountain stands high and is around two meters away from the water surface. Other discoveries found longtime sunken ships in the sea’s abyss.
Abdulmajeed Al-Khaldi, public relations director at SGS, said the discovery was made during a maritime survey to monitor data in the depths of the Red Sea. “The mountain is about 500 meters high, but the distance between its peak and the surface of the water is not more than two meters,” he explained.
Speaking on the sidelines of the National Geographic Information Systems Forum held in Dammam recently, Al-Khaldi said, “SGS is the authority responsible for publishing and disclosing geographical information and data surveys, as well as other maritime reports.”
