White tea has been much in the news recently, with numerous studies elaborating on its medical and nutritional benefits.
White tea is an immature tea leaf that is picked shortly before the buds are fully bloomed. It is named such because white tea comes from the silver fur that covers the flower buds, which turn into white when the tea is dried and ready to be used. There are different kinds of white tea depending on the flowers and buds; White Peony contains one bud for every two leaves. The best kind of white tea is made from downy buds picked within an exact of two-day period in early spring.
Recent studies at Pace University have shown that there is a major health benefit of white tea extract — it can kill bacteria, viruses, and fungi in the body with more success than other teas. The study focused primarily on the bacteria that cause Staphylococcus infections, Streptococcus infections, and pneumonia. The same study concluded that fluoride-rich white tea helps prevent the growth of dental plaque, the chief cause of tooth decay.
Green tea Vs white tea: Green tea is made from more mature tea leaves than white tea, and may be withered prior to steaming or firing. “Green tea stimulates the immune system to fight disease. White tea extract can actually destroy in vitro the organisms that cause disease. Study after study on white tea extract proves that it has many healing properties,” said nutritionist Salma Al-Harbi.
Al-Harbi shares with us the benefits of white tea:
1) Anti-bacterial and anti-virus qualities: White tea can help deactivate bacteria, viruses, and yeasts that exist in the human body. “It is said that white tea is more powerful than green tea and black tea in killing bacterial viruses and it also can help with cavity, gum and bad breath,” she said.
2) Good for the heart: White tea can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol level. “Those who drink three to four cups of white tea can cut the risk of a heart attack by half because white tea is a heart tonic,” said Al-Harbi.
3) Can help those who suffer from diabetes: “Studies have shown that white tea can actually help reduce sugar in the blood leading to reduce the symptoms of diabetes,” she said.
4) Losing weight and managing it. “White tea contains caffeine, which can help with weight loss. It also contains high levels of antioxidants that can help to boost metabolism and control the appetite,” said Al-Harbi. ” Research has found that this tea can prevent new fat cells from developing and encourage the breakdown of fat in already existing fat cells,” she added.
5) Great for skin and anti-ageing: “Antioxidants in white tea and anti-aging properties protect and help reverse damage done to it by free radicals that can come from stress or over exposing it to the sun,” she said.
6) Healthy bones and teeth: “Drinking white tea regularly can improve bone density and strength, and may provide relief from the symptoms of osteoporosis.”
How to prepare a cup of white tea
You need to follow a different method than what is usually used for black or green tea. Boil water to a temperature of 170 degrees Fahrenheit and let it sit for around a minute. Then pour it over the white tea leaves.
Bear in mind that white tea is not as deep as green or black tea. You should use double the portion starting with two teaspoons of leaves for every cup and start tasting it until you get your desired taste. Let the tea sit for at least 4 minutes for the aroma to come out and so that the leaves open up and then you can enjoy it.
