DAMMAM, 13 January 2008 — Police are investigating the origins of counterfeit Saudi currency discovered at a number of banks in the Al-Ahsa, Hafer Al-Batin and Al-Khafji areas of the Eastern Province.

“The fake currency was included in cash deposited by various customers, including businessmen. Banks have very advanced equipment to detect fake notes,” said Col. Yusuf Al-Qahtani, spokesman for the Eastern Province police. The notes included SR500, SR200 and SR100 bills.

At least 55 SR500 bills have been discovered in the last four months alone, Al-Qahtani said, adding that more than 20 people of different nationalities, including citizens, are currently being investigated.
